INVENTIVE IMAGING:
How Photography (Mis)Shapes the News and Misleads the Public

Presentation of "Photojournalism Behind The Scenes"
and Discussion with Photographer Ruben Salvadori

Ruben Salvadori's “Photojournalism Behind the Scenes” examines the role photographers play in portraying East Jerusalem to the world media. This photo-essay is a form of self-criticism by Salvadori after seeing how the media market of the photo agencies pushes many photographers to opt for a hedonistic approach, which does not encourage them to consider how their presence influences the events they witness and how their images are produced.

Salvadori is an Italian photographer who graduated with dual degrees in International Relations and Anthropology/Sociology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel. Ruben uses photography as an academic aid for his anthropological research. He mixes his academic background with a visual documentary-style approach to gain in-depth, empirical research results through his images. Ruben's photographic work has been published on many news platforms throughout the world. Additionally, he worked as director of photography for the movie "Inside Jerusalem" and he is currently producing an Anthropological documentary on a millenary ritual of flagellation in Southern Italy. Ruben speaks Italian, English, Hebrew, and Spanish.

After the Arab Spring: The Military Challenges Facing Israel
A Conversation with Yaakov Katz, Military Correspondent and Defense Analyst for the Jerusalem Post

The Arab Spring of 2011 altered the political environment for many nations in the Middle East. While tolerant, liberal regimes may emerge, ready for genuine coexistence with Israel, many questions have to be asked. What is to become of peace agreements that enabled reduction or redeployment of military forces? What do the dramatic upheavals mean for Israel and its vital need for defensible borders? Geography hasn't changed; Israel remains a small country, only nine miles wide at its narrow neck. What do the Arab revolutions mean the for Israel Defense Force's ability to protect the Jewish State?

Journalist Warren Kozak interviews Yaakov Katz for answers.

Yaakov Katz is the military correspondent and defense analyst for the Jerusalem Post, Israel's leading English daily. Mr. Katz spent January 2009 with the IDF along Israel's border with the Gaza Strip, leading the paper's coverage of Israel's war against Hamas.

Warren Kozak has worked as a writer for some of Israel's most prestigious network anchors. His work has appeared in the Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post and The New York Sun, as well as other newspapers and magazines.
