The Global Campaign to Delegitimize Israel

Israel faces a convergence of global forces that may undermine its legitimacy in the eyes of the the world community. A two-day conference will bring together international experts to articulate the enormous challenges of the moment as well as to define constructive action to be taken in countering the biased onslaught. The focus will include the role of the media, NGOs, the UN, academia and the mainline churches in threatening Israel's legitimacy. The urgent conditions in Europe will be examined as well.

Anne Bayefsky  is a senior fellow with the Hudson Institute. She has taught at Columbia University, York University in Toronto, and the University of Ottawa. In January 2003 she launched www.eyeontheun.org, a major human rights Web site dedicated to enhancing the implementation of the human rights legal standards of the United Nations.

 

Yigal Carmon is the president and founder of the Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI), an organization that monitors and translates Arabic and Persian publications, radio and TV broadcasts and religious sermons into many languages. MEMRI is cited extensively by the media, government officials, policy experts and academics.

Irwin Cotler is a Canadian Member of Parliament who was first elected in 1999 and has also served as Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada. An international human rights lawyer and peace activist, he has been a leader in the development of international humanitarian law.

Alan Dershowitz is the Felix Frankfurter Professor of Law at Harvard University and a renowned champion of the First Amendment and defender of individual rights. Known as "Israel’s single most visible defender" he has published hundreds of articles in magazines and journals. He is the author of 27 books, including The Case for Israel and the Case for Moral Clarity: Israel, Hamas and Gaza.

Dr. Manfred Gerstenfeld  holds a PhD in environmental studies and a degree in Judaism. He writes and publishes extensively on Jewish affairs, including recently editing Behind the Humanitarian Mask: The Nordic Countries, Israel and the Jews. He is chairman of the Steering Committee of the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs.

Philippe Karsenty  is a French media analyst and the founder of Media-Ratings, which monitors the French media. In 2004, he was sued for libel by French television network, for accusing its reporters of broadcasting staged footage of the alleged Israeli killing of 12-year old Muhammad al-Durrah. Karsenty eventually won the case on appeal.

Yaakov Kirschen  is creator of the legendary political cartoon Dry Bones which ran in the Jerusalem Post for more than 30 years. The cartoon has been reprinted or quoted by the NY Times, Time Mag, LA Times, CBS, AP and many others. His cartoons can also be seen at drybonesblog.blogspot.com.

Andrea Levin is the Executive Director and President of CAMERA. She writes and lectures widely on media coverage of the Arab-Israeli conflict and its impact on public opinion. Her articles have appeared in newspapers and magazines internationally.

Kenneth Levin is a clinical instructor in Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and has a Ph.D. from Princeton in history. He has written extensively on Israel and the Arab-Israeli conflict with articles appearing in major publications worldwide. He is the author of The Oslo Syndrome: Delusions of a People Under Siege.

Melanie Phillips is a British journalist and author who writes an influential column about political and social issues for the Daily Mail. Her books Londonistan and, most recently, The World Turned Upside Down: The Global Battle over God, Truth and Power chronicle the dramatic upheavals and cultural transformations of the day in Britain and beyond.

Daniel Pipes, author of twelve books, is director of the Middle East Forum and visiting fellow at the Hoover Institution of Stanford University. His bi-weekly column appears in the National Review and in newspapers around the globe. His Web site, DanielPipes.org, is one of the most visited internet sources for information on the Middle East and Islam.

Alvin H. Rosenfeld  is a Professor of English and Jewish Studies and Director of the Institute for the Study of Contemporary Anti-Semitism at Indiana University. He is the author of numerous scholarly articles on American poetry, Jewish writers, and the literature of the Holocaust. His new book, The End of the Holocaust, will be published this spring.

 

Tammi Rossman-Benjamin is a lecturer in Hebrew and Jewish Studies at the University of California Santa Cruz, a member of the Board of Directors of Scholars for Peace in the Middle East, and Chairman of the Simon Wiesenthal Center Campus Outreach Advisory Council. She is involved in efforts to combat the rise of campus anti-Semitism.

Alex Safian is the Associate Director and Research Director at CAMERA. His articles have appeared in newspapers, magazines and academic journals. Safian has also lectured widely in the United States, Canada and Israel on media coverage of the Middle East as well as related issues.

Gerald Steinberg  is a Professor of Political Studies at Bar Ilan University, directs the Program on Conflict Management and Negotiation and heads NGO Monitor. He specializes in Israeli political developments, Middle East diplomatic and security issues, and is a fellow of the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs.

Bret Stephens is the Wall Street Journal's Deputy Editorial Page Editor (International) and the paper's principal columnist on foreign affairs. From March 2002 to October 2004 Mr. Stephens was editor-in-chief of the Jerusalem Post, a position he assumed at age 28 and was responsible for the paper's news, editorial, electronic and international divisions.

Mark Steyn is the author of America Alone: The End Of The World As We Know It, a New York Times bestseller and a top bestseller in Canada. His writing on politics, arts and culture can be read each week throughout much of the English-speaking world.
