Hamas

Error (Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Margaret Coker, 2/19/06): Haniyeh, an articulate and sophisticated man in his early 40s, is known for his pragmatism. According to friends and family, he is the right man for the daunting task of unifying Palestinians and confronting Israel in the quest to establish an independent Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

Fact: Hamas has repeatedly made clear—in its charter, in public appearances by its leaders, and elsewhere—that it seeks to destroy all of Israel and replace it with an Islamic state.

Error (Cox News Service, 2/19/06): Hamas, formally known as the Islamic Resistance Movement, has been designated a terrorist organization by Israel and the United States for its support of suicide attacks against Israelis as part of its fight against continued military occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip

Fact: Hamas itself has repeatedly made clear—in its charter, in public appearances by its officials, and elsewhere—that the reason for its existence and its operations is to destroy all of Israel and replace it with an Islamic state.
