Dismal Corrections

Sacramento Bee

Error (Sacramento Bee, photo caption, 4/3/04): Police stormed the [Temple Mount] site Friday, firing tear gas, stun grenades and plastic bullets to disperse Muslim worshippers.

Attempted Correction (4/6/04): A photo caption on page A19 Saturday should have said that Israeli police stormed the Al Aqsa Mosque compound in Jerusalem to disperse stone-throwing Palestinians who were upset by the heavy police presence during Friday prayers.

CAMERA: The accompanying story by the Los Angeles Times’ Laura King does not support the bizarre claim that Palestinians threw stones in response to “the heavy police presence.” The nonsensical correction is contradictory; if there was a “heavy police presence,” why would the police need to “storm the site”?
