CAMERA Prompts AP Correction on Palestine Terminology

In response to communication from CAMERA’s Israel office, the Associated Press yesterday corrected an article which incorrectly referred to Palestine. Karin Laub’s Sept. 11 article about breweries in the Middle East, had originally stated: “Veteran brewer Nadim Khoury, who launched Taybeh beer in the West Bank in 1994 and now makes 600,000 liters a year, takes pride in being the first to put Palestine on the global beer map.”

CAMERA noted that the reference to the West Bank or to Palestinian-controlled territories as “Palestine” is not consistent with AP usage, and is misleading. The AP commendably updated the article, and replaced the reference to Palestine with the word Palestinians.

CAMERA’s timely action and AP’s quick correction underscores the value of CAMERA’s work monitoring and responding to wire stories in the same news cycle as they appear. With this timely, preemptive work, CAMERA’s Israel office helps prevent misinformation from appearing in media outlets around the world.

Indeed, Haaretz‘s Sept. 12 Hebrew print edition includes a Hebrew translation of the updated AP story with the correct terminology.
