C-SPAN October – December 2016

Send your comments about C-SPAN's platform for the defamation of Israel and Jews to CAMERA:  c-span-watch@camera.org

December 30, 2016 – 7:49 a.m.

Host: GRETA BRAWNER [gbrawner@c-span.org, journal@c-span.org, viewer@c-span.org, Twitter: @gretabrawner (https://twitter.com/gretabrawner), @cspanwj, facebook.com/cspan].

Topic: U.S. sanctions Russia over election hacking.

Caller: Rene from Starkville, Mississippi, independent (click here to view).

Note:  Host properly challenges accuser of Israel (claims Israel, not Russia, did the election hacking), demanding that caller identify her information source.

Caller: “I just want to say that this temper tantrum by the [Obama] administration is in response to being iced out of the Middle East. You read [host had read from newspapers] a short while ago about Turkey, Russia, and Iran making peace in Syria. For eight years, this administration has had failed policies in the Middle East. This is the final outcry; the final rejection of any common sense in the Middle East. And if you want to talk about interference in elections, you can look at [Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu for where this leak of the Democrat material came from because Obama interfered in the Israeli elections against Netanyahu making him a mortal enemy. This comes from even … At the bottom, the leak is an Israeli operation.”

Host: “Okay; what evidence do you have of that?”

Caller: “Just look it up on the Internet. You can go to [names an unreliable fringe Web site] that says that there was Democrat-Obama-Clinton interference in the Israeli election. You can see that the Israelis – Netanyahu – blame the administration of Obama for interfering in the Israeli elections.”

Host: “Rene, the U.S. intelligence agencies say that it was Russia that did the hacking and they have put out a report, an extensive report to go to Congress in the coming weeks. You do not believe that?”

Caller: “I don't, because this is the same intelligence that gave us the Iraq lies.”

Host: “Okay.”

NOTE:  Host's response  to caller is a welcome departure from the Washington Journal norm in which, when false accusations are made against Israel or Jews, hosts are either unwilling or unable to challenge. Yet, to go beyond a basic "What's your source?" type of response, one would think that C-SPAN could provide from among its nearly 300 employees, fact sheets and reasonably unbiased talking points for use by Washington Journal hosts about the Israeli-Arab conflict. If C-SPAN ever decides to turn over a new leaf in this regard, a good place to start would be to reference CAMERA's C-SPAN Watch online feature.

December 29, 2016 – 7:00 a.m.

Host: KIMBERLY ATKINS, Boston Herald newspaper chief Washington reporter and columnist [journal@c-span.org, viewer@c-span.org, @cspanwj, facebook.com/cspan].

Topic: What is your view of U.S.-Israel relations? (Click here to view segment).

Thirty callers phoned in between 7:05 and 7:57 a.m. to register their opinions on the topic: 19 opposing Israel, 8 supporting Israel, 3 neutral. This ratio is typical of Washington Journal but out of step with the American people as a whole. Opinion polling over a period of several years repeatedly shows majority support for Israel.

• The opposing-Israel phoners voiced blatant, unchallenged misinformation and falsehoods (the type repeatedly refuted by CAMERA's C-SPAN Watch online feature) such as:

“Jewish housing in the West Bank, Trump is now defending that. How can you disavow David Duke and yet support widespread Jewish only or whites only housing in the West Bank or anywhere?” [Joe, 7:06 a.m.].

“Look, it's time for the American people to realize that Israel was only interested in three things. In taking all the land they can take from the Palestinians, interested in getting as much money as they can get from the United States… And they are interested in dragging the United States into a war against Iran”[repeat caller Omar from Terre Haute, Indiana at 7:13 a.m.].

“Mr. Netanyahu is very disrespectful. He's not a nice person” [Mavis at 7:21 a.m.].

“The Israeli people took over Palestine the same way they got the land originally, they came in and they killed everybody, man, woman, and child, animals, left no stone upon another. That's what they are trying to do again” [Dan from Oregon at 7:25 a.m.].

“I agree with that lady, they are fake Jews [Israel's Jewish population]. It is a synagogue of Satan. I'm a veteran and a taxpayer and I'm sick of sending my money to Israel, the original terrorists. They terrorize their way through there, they got that land. They been killing Palestinians ever since” [Carol from St. Louis, Missouri at 8:36 a.m.].

• Two of the callers voiced falsehoods concerning Jews that are right out of the racist playbook of Rev. Louis Farrakhan and his Nation of Islam:

“Those Jews [in Israel] that are there are Europeans. They are fake Jews. They are not the same Jews. We are them -- the black people, dark skinned people. We have all been told bunch of lies.” [David from Georgia at 7:31 a.m.].

“They don't have but one drop of blood of Abraham in them. The black people are the true Israelites” [Katherine from Springfield, Mass. at 7:34 a.m.]

Refuting this false narrative are the facts that show that there is a continuous Jewish diaspora history, from the Roman expulsions to the rebirth of Israel as a Jewish state, and modern DNA testing that strongly indicates both Jewish genealogical continuity and Middle Eastern origins of the current Israeli population.

C-SPAN hosts never challenge such callers. It's left up to the rare Washington Journal caller like Priscilla from West Hills, California at 7:54 a.m.:

“My heart is breaking hearing all the people calling in. Sounds like a lot of them are blacks who are calling. I hear antisemitism. I hear people quoting the Bible, the King James Bible. I read it. And what I read is different from what they are quoting. And I'm so sad. Because that is Israel's land. In fact, it is more than what they are sitting on right now. They have given up so much land to the Palestinians. They always say that they want them annihilated. It's awful.

I can't imagine what we would feel right here if Mexico and Canada were doing to us what all of those people surrounding Israel are doing to them, every single day, you know? We have problems with ISIS and with the people and what they did to the Twin Towers [in New York]. That happens to Israel every single day. They have to build bunkers just to try and live and survive. I'm so saddened to hear the majority of the people calling in here this morning that are so anti-Israel and agreeing with [President] Obama. It breaks my heart. I'm a black person and I know what God said [in the Bible]. He said that if you curse Israel, you will be cursed. If you bless Israel, you will be blessed. These people need to come back to the Bible. I don't know where they get this …”

NOTE: Host Atkins, typical of Journal hosts, challenged none of the antisemitic or anti-Israel phoners. This is consistent with Journal's chronic journalistic malpractice pertaining to anti-Jewish fallacies repeatedly disseminated to potentially millions of C-SPAN viewers.

December 26, 2016 – 7:17 a.m.

Host:  PAUL ORGEL [porgel@c-span.org, journal@c-span.org, viewer@c-span.org, @PaulLOrgel, @cspanwj, facebook.com/cspan ].

[Entry below for Dec. 21, 2016 8:54 a.m. contains an Orgel “classic”]

Topic: Top national security concerns for the new year.

Caller: Gloria from Negaunee, Michigan (click here to view).

Caller: “I believe we do provide money to Israel. How they use it I am sure in part is for their protection. Yet Bibi [Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu can summon our ambassador to him [concerning the U.N. Security Council resolution] as if we owe him some great debt. I think that's hubris in the first degree. That is what I have to say.”

Host: “Thank you. We are asking you what your top national security concerns are heading into the new year.”

NOTE: The entry below for December 25 7:40 a.m. explains the reason for concern about the U.N. Security resolution of December 23. Yes, the caller is correct in saying “I believe we do provide money to Israel” but Israel's reaction to the U.S. vote which breaks new ground is probably not fairly characterized as “hubris.” There are two sides to this conflict, but Israel's side was nowhere in the resolution. The UN endorsed the Palestinian narrative – and that's a danger to Israel's future. The vote constitutes a propaganda bonanza for critics of Israel and will make progress toward a “two-state solution” all the tougher to achieve.

As to the “money” provided, consider the mutual benefits of aid to Israel. First, financial (it is military only) aid to Israel constitutes only a tiny portion of the federal budget (less than 0.1 percent). Second, Israel is required by U.S. law to spend 74 percent (soon to be 100 percent) of the U.S. aid in the United States for the purchase of military materials which helps create or sustain thousands of American jobs.

Third, cooperative arrangements with Israel provide technology benefits to America related to unmanned aircraft, anti-missile defenses, battlefield medical techniques. For example, Israeli-developed technologies include unmanned aerial vehicles, decoys to confuse enemy radars, tank armor to repel fire and armored tiles to protect from improvised explosive devices (IEDs)—all of which save U.S. lives.

A U.S. Secretary of State, Al Haig, once said, "Israel is the largest American aircraft carrier in the world that cannot be sunk, does not carry even one American soldier and is located in a critical region for American national security." Former Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Admiral Mike Mullen called the relationship with Israel "absolutely critical" to U.S. national security. Additionally, Israel, with less than nine million people, is America's 20th largest customer (larger than Russia or Spain). Consider votes in the United Nations over the last several years that coincided with U.S. votes – Israel is 90 percent, all other recipients of U.S. support are under 20 percent – Pakistan, Jordan, Egypt, Iraq, Afghanistan, Philippines and so-on.

It should be obvious, except to the most biased individuals, that Israel is an exceptionally valuable American ally.

December 25, 2016 – 7:40 a.m.

Host: BILL SCANLAN [bscanlan@c-span.org, journal@c-span.org, viewer@c-span.org, @bscanlanCSPAN, @cspanwj, facebook.com/cspan ].

Topic: Open phones (caller selects topic).

Caller: Mohammed from Indianapolis, Indiana (click here to view).

Note: Typically, a C-SPAN Washington Journal caller voices a misleading message about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. And whenever the subject is mentioned, C-SPAN chronically fails its “public service” mandate to even minimally inform viewers and callers about the realities of the Arab-Israeli conflict.

Caller: “I am confused when I look at the beautiful comments made by U.S. House Speaker [Paul] Ryan during the joy he has with his family and the movie they watch every year to celebrate the Holiday, and at the same time, this is the same Speaker Ryan who whenever it was announced that civilized countries like France and the U.K. and Venezuela and China and Russia, they all voted to show some civility towards the Palestinians, he was outraged. He was outraged about that so I am confused. Is he a hypocrite? He wants all of this beautiful joy for his family, and he is outraged that justice, just a small semblance of justice, knocked on the door of the Palestinian people and even though it was only in theory, he is outraged about the theory. They will not receive the justice that the Security Council voted for. But by the same token, I am confused how a man could be in that position and want all the beautiful things for his family and want to deny the Palestinian people who have been denied since 1947. Thank you so very much.”

Host: “Thank you.”

NOTE: Caller Mohammed's narrative is misleading and illogical. If not for a faulty leadership and problematic Arab dominant culture, the Palestinian people could have had their own state years ago which seems to be the “justice” that Mohammed wants for the Palestinian Arabs.

The United Nations Security Council on Dec. 23, 2016 passed Resolution 2334, asserting that Israeli settlements have "no legal validity" and are a "flagrant violation under international law and a major obstacle to the achievement of the two-State solution ..." The resolution also advised all states "to distinguish, in their relevant dealings, between the territory of the State of Israel and the territories occupied since 1967."

The decision by President Obama to allow the resolution to pass is likely to be a mirror image of his ill-fated demand soon after his inauguration in 2009 that Israel impose a settlement freeze, which backfired and damaged the prospects for peace. Res. 2334 may well be just as counterproductive and in a similar way but because it passed under Chapter 6 of the UN Charter, the resolution is advisory, does not create binding obligations or international law, and passage does not make the settlements "illegal."

Furthermore, the vote would seem to go against the right of Jews to live in the West Bank which is strongly rooted both in international law and in post-biblical history and cultural and religious ties. And the Jewish presence in the territory was recognized as legitimate in the Mandate for Palestine adopted by the League of Nations in 1922, which provided for the establishment of a Jewish state in the Jewish people's ancient homeland.

Moreover, any emphasis on “settlements” in terms of denying “justice” and as the major obstacle to peace is misplaced. First, the settlements comprise only six percent of the West Bank (Judea and Samaria – referred to as such in the Christian New Testament as well as other historical sources – part of the ancient homeland of the Jewish people). Additionally, during the period 1948-1967 when Jewish communities were absent from the West Bank, the state of hostilities existed against the Jewish state based on the desire to destroy Israel. So, the settlements issue as the major obstacle to a peace agreement is a bogus one. This logic evidently escapes the United Nations Security Council.

The reality is this: Israel declared its independence on May 14, 1948, in keeping with the U.N.'s 1947 partition plan. Immediately the armies of Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Iraq and Lebanon invaded Israel aiming at destroying the new (or restored) Jewish state. Instead, had the Palestinian Arabs and the Arab countries accepted the U.N. partition [resolution], had they not waged a war of aggression against Israel in violation of the U.N. Charter, and had they not invaded Israel, there would not have been a single Palestinian Arab refugee. Instead, there would have been a [second] Palestinian Arab state (side-by-side with Israel, in addition to Jordan, which occupies 77 percent of the original Palestine Mandate territory and includes a majority Palestinian Arab population) that would also be celebrating its anniversary in May. In addition, the 6000 Israelis who were killed in the war – one percent of the population – would instead have lived; likewise the Arabs fallen in a war imposed by Arab leadership. But because the Arabs were more interested in destroying Jewish Israel than creating another Arab state, millions of people – both Arabs and Jews, suffered unnecessarily.

Now, Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu awaits a meaningful response regarding negotiations from the Palestinian side while his counterpart, Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas, has repeatedly and explicitly rejected the idea of two states for two peoples. Palestinian leaders rejected U.S. and Israeli offers of two-state solutions in 2000, 2001, 2008 and spurned renewed talks on such an agreement proposed by Secretary of State John Kerry in 2014. The PA insists on various conditions unlikely to be accepted by any Israeli government before peace negotiations can take place, including: Israel must abide by Palestinian refusal to recognize Israel as a Jewish state (evidently 22 Arab Muslim states is fine but one Jewish state is one too many) and Israel must accept a "right of return" (that does not exist in international law) for millions of Arabs (nearly all of whom have never lived in Israel) which would inevitably result in the Jewish state becoming unviable.

Thus, the demand for “civility” and “justice” that caller Mohammed aims at the Jewish state and its supporters, is misplaced.

December 24, 2016 – 7:00 a.m.

Host: KIMBERLY ATKINS, Boston Herald newspaper chief Washington reporter and columnist [journal@c-span.org, viewer@c-span.org, @cspanwj, facebook.com/cspan].

Topic: U.S. abstains from U.N. vote on Israel.

[The American delegation to the United Nations abstained from voting on a resolution of the United Nations Security Council condemning Israel for settlement construction, allowing the measure to pass. This is a reversal of U.S. policy, which has been for decades that peace between Israel and the Palestinians can only come through direct negotiations.]

Note: The broadcast's first segment (click here to view) provided a total of 21 callers that can be categorized as follows: Hostile toward Israel: 14 callers. Critical of U.S. failure to veto the resolution: 7 callers. (None of the callers could be fairly characterized as neutral on the matter). A caller ratio of 2-1 against Israel is typical for Washington Journal but not typical of the American people as a whole for which opinion polls over a period of many years consistently show a majority supporting Israel's position.

Host Atkins' introductory remarks: “In the headlines, a vote yesterday by the UN Security Council demanding Israel stop expansion of Jewish settlements in Palestinian territory has caused a rift between the Obama administration and president-elect Donald Trump. The United States abstained from the vote, a departure from tradition which has seen the United States veto such resolutions. The abstention, which allows the measure to pass, was met with criticism by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Donald Trump who tweeted things would be different in his administration. We're taking your calls on the vote to criticize the expansion of Jewish settlements in Palestinian territories. Tell us what your views are. Republicans can call (202) 748-8001. Democrats can call (202) 748-8000. Independents can call (202) 748-8002. You can also reach us on social media, on twitter, cspanwj and on facebook.com/cspan.”

NOTE: The first caller at 7:04 a.m. – James from Texas – was hostile toward Israel. He likened Israelis living in the West Bank (“settlers”) to immigrants illegally crossing the U.S. border from Mexico (“It seems to me like Mexico coming into the United States and people here letting them come in with nothing. They just come in and take our land.”) The 21st (last) caller at 7:57 a.m. – Richard from Kentucky – was critical of the U.S. failure to veto – (“Israel will not stand for anything the United Nations does against them and their people. I predict that the United Nations will be long gone before Donald Trump leaves office.”). At 7:54 a.m., Christian Zionist caller Ruth from Illinois – cited Bible scripture in objecting to the U.N. vote.

The first caller typified the 14 callers hostile toward Israel who view the Israelis as usurpers of the Palestinian West Bank land and these callers generally view this as the main obstacle to a peace agreement. Host Atkins failed to ask for any caller's information source(s) but an anti-Israel caller (from Ohio at 7:33 a.m.) took the liberty of advertising five obscure, fringe Web sites.

C-SPAN viewers are rarely, if ever, informed of the realities of the Israeli-Palestinian Arab conflict. First, concerning the West Bank (Judea and Samaria – referred to as such in the Christian New Testament as well as other historical sources – part of the ancient homeland of the Jewish people), Israel remains the legal, obligatory military occupational authority having taken that area in self-defense in the 1967 Six-Day War pending conclusion of a negotiated agreement on the territories' final status. Israeli troops had withdrawn from the majority of Palestinian population centers in the West Bank after Israel and the Palestinian Authority (PA) signed an interim agreement on Sept. 28, 1995. But with the resumption of Palestinian violence against Israelis during the second intifada (2000 to 2005), Israeli troops re-established a major presence in the West Bank but do not have a presence in Palestinian cities except when there are security needs. In any case, the PA currently has jurisdiction over the daily lives of almost all (93 percent of) West Bank Arabs.

The critics of settlements fail to acknowledge that all, or nearly all, of of the settlement growth that is taking place is the result of natural, internal population growth; not from expansion outwards. The settlements are basically entirely on land legally owned having been purchased. Furthermore, C-SPAN viewers are never informed that settlements comprise only six percent of the disputed territory and that Israel in the 2008 two-state offer it made – and Palestinian leadership rejected – put forth the notion of compensating land swaps.

Meanwhile Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu awaits a meaningful response regarding negotiations from the Palestinian side while his counterpart, Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas, has repeatedly and explicitly rejected the idea of two states for two peoples.

December 21, 2016 – 8:54 a.m.

Host: PAUL ORGEL [porgel@c-span.org, journal@c-span.org, viewer@c-span.org, @PaulLOrgel, @cspanwj, facebook.com/cspan ].

[In a classic instance of Orgel's frequent unprofessional performance  (at least as it pertains to Israel or Jews) as Washington Journal host, he indulged a lunatic-fringe caller's identical inflammatory views defaming Israel twice only 22 hours apart in January 2010. The caller used two different names and claimed two separate (distant) locations, saying virtually the same thing each time and in the same distinctive voice. Click here to view a 3.5 minute video clip of Orgel indulging "Janet from Birmingham, Alabama" on January 1, 2010 at 9:51 AM and then (the same individual again) on January 2 at 7:50 AM indulging "Carol from Scottsville, Arizona."]

Guest: Carol Anderson, Emory University African American Studies Department professor.

Topic: Guest talks about her book “White Rage: The Unspoken Truth of Our Racial Divide” in which she argues that throughout history, progress for black Americans has been met by what she calls “white rage.”

Caller: Don from California (click here to view).

Note: Repeat caller voices his usual racist, false narrative.

Caller: “Good morning, Ms. Anderson. I am quite sure you are an educator and you know everything like that. But now, I am wondering have you ever, you know, decided to go to the Bible, the word of God in order to find out what our history is about? Black people in America are cursed. And this occurs from God. And our oppressor is the white men which is the oppressor of the world. The Bible says that the Earth is given over into the hands of the wicked, Okay. And so therefore, everything is done by him because he has covered the faces of the real judge which is Jesus Christ, which was a black man and they gave us this white Jesus we have now. And we are following their ways and ways of life as opposed to the way we were which were the Jews of antiquity. We are the real Jews of America and we are not Americans. We are not Africans. Where not none of that. We are Judites [sic.]. You need to listen to the Israelites. Everyone in America -- all you blacks, Hispanics and native Americans, you need to turn to the Israelites and listen to their program and listen to what they are trying to say. Everything they say comes from the Bible.”

Host: “Comments from Don.”

Guest: “As I mentioned earlier, the Bible has actually been used to provide cover for the subjugation of black people in the United States. I think that's absolutely misleading and misuse of the Bible. One of the things we saw in the civil rights movement, in fact, you had ministers, black ministers, who had been preaching from it is supposed to be bad done here for black people. That's what the Bible says. You have to take it and you will get yours and I'll by and by, the hereafter. And then are another way led by Reverend Verna Jones and then Dr. Martin Luther King came up as saying, they were reading from another side. That's what we have to understand about the Bible. It is open to interpretation. It is also open to the uses for those who have various pernicious, very pernicious intent. We really have to think about what is Biblical is saying in terms of basic humanity and basic decency. That is where we need to be really reading and not about issues of subjugation and oppression.”

NOTE: Typically, neither host nor guest challenge caller's false narrative concerning Jews which is right out of the racist playbook of Rev. Louis Farrakhan and his Nation of Islam. Caller's misinformation is easily refuted by the facts. There is a continuous Jewish diaspora history, from the Roman expulsions to the rebirth of Israel as a Jewish state, and modern DNA testing that strongly indicates both Jewish genealogical continuity and Middle Eastern origins of the current Israeli population. Click here for previous C-SPAN Watch entry, September 23, 2016 – 7:19 a.m., as well as prior entries for repeat caller “Don.”

December 21, 2016 – 9:03 a.m.

Host: PAUL ORGEL [porgel@c-span.org, journal@c-span.org, viewer@c-span.org, @PaulLOrgel, @cspanwj, facebook.com/cspan ].

Guest: Carol Anderson, Emory University, African American Studies Department professor.

Topic: Guest talks about her book “White Rage: The Unspoken Truth of Our Racial Divide,” in which she argues that throughout history, progress for black Americans has been met by what she calls “white rage.”

Caller: Kathleen from Pompano Beach, Florida (click here to view).

Note: Another indulged caller voices the half-baked ideas (about who are the “real” Jews or real “Israelites”) right out of the racist playbook of Rev. Louis Farrakhan and his Nation of Islam.

Caller: “I'm sitting here listening and I just want to say we as Hebrew Israelites. We didn't teach our people what was black people before slavery. You're always taking about slavery. Slavery, slavery! What were we doing before slavery? What were we doing on the west coast of Africa? What were we doing when our ancestors ran out of Jerusalem into west Africa? Okay. What were we doing? Like the guy said, we need to go by God's law. God gave the Hebrew Israelites laws. We broke them laws; we are cursed. He sold us into slavery because we broke the laws. We need to go back to God's laws ... [voice cutting out].”

Host: “We're losing Kathleen; but we do understand the point. How about a response?”

Guest: “Okay. The response is, I mean, there are -- I talk about slavery because that is where the book starts. But there are many scholars who fully document what was happening in west Africa. So that is just not the focus of this conversation, but one of the things that you do see and I don't want us to think of slavery as like, Oh God … because in fact, the enslaved fought. They fought for their freedom. They resisted. They broke their tools. They put rocks in the bags instead of cotton. They ran away. They resisted. They fought for their freedom and I want to also deal with the kind of ‘we broke God's law and so we are cursed.' If we really are looking at the Bible, everybody has broken God's law. So, that would mean everybody would be cursed and enslaved. We need to be much more judicious and we need to be more humane about the way that we think about religion and the Bible.”

Note: As with caller “Don,” typically for Washington Journal, neither host nor guest challenge caller's false narrative concerning Jews and Israel.

December 20, 2016 – 7:29 a.m.

Host: JOHN MCARDLE [jmcardle@c-span.org, journal@c-span.org, viewer@c-span.org, @cspanMcArdle, @cspanwj, facebook.com/cspan ].

Topic: How concerned are you about the previous-day attacks in Germany and Turkey? Twelve people in Berlin were killed when a truck jumped a curb and drove into a crowd of people at a Christmas market. In Ankara, a lone gunman shot and killed the Russian ambassador to Turkey.

Caller: Maria from Woodbury, New Jersey (click here to view).

Note: Characteristically in keeping with Washington Journal's chronic journalistic malpractice, a C-SPAN host indulges a repeat caller's lengthy rant which typically includes defamation of Israel.

Caller: “The real problem here is we have not gone back to our founders who were wise and gave is that wisdom. We should not have any foreign entanglements. For whatever reason, we voted to take Britain's place in the world and we are playing the great game again. These are reruns. We have to go back to being an example to other people, using private charities and bringing our troops home and bringing them to our borders. I think the United Nations is a farce; it's a criminal enterprise. They are thinking about sending monitors to a place where thousands of people have died. I think we have to come home; have a family discussion about what our families needs are and bring the trillions of dollars home. Donald Trump wants to change the capital of Israel to Jerusalem. That is another war in the making. We should disengage ourselves and not have special friends or enemies. Why arming giving Israel the money and our newest weapons when they are the third largest arms dealer? We have to look at that. I pray that Americans will influence Congress and get us out of all of the foreign entanglements; get all of the foreigners out of our country. And Merry Christmas to you, John.”

Host: “Fifteen minutes left in this segment. We are talking about Monday's attacks in Germany and Turkey.”

NOTE: Repeat caller Maria is again indulged by this same host, McArdle (see below). First, Maria grossly exaggerates when she says, "they [Israel] are the [world's] third largest arms dealer." But The New York Times reports that Israel is 10th just after Turkey and Britain. C-SPAN's Washington Journal can nearly always, if not always, be counted upon not to challenge an anti-Israel exaggeration.

The facts refuting what the caller says about Jerusalem are these: First, the capital of Israel doesn't need to be changed. Jerusalem has been and is now the capital of the Jewish state as it was in ancient times. And it's never in history been any nation's capital except that of the Jewish state. Further, Jerusalem has had a majority Jewish population since the 1850s.

With one exception, for every one of the more than one hundred nations the United States recognizes, it accepts that nation's self-proclaimed capital and as such, locates the U.S. embassy there. The one exception is Israel's capital of Jerusalem. The refusal so far appears to have been based on an effort to mollify the Palestinian Arabs who insist that Jerusalem must be their capital (no other location will suffice) in a future Palestinian state. This Arab obsession with Jerusalem relates at least partially to Islamic theology. Of course, it's too much to expect that a Journal host would know any of this or if the host does know it – be willing to inform viewers.

Invariably, when Israel is lambasted on the basis of financial aid, C-SPAN fails to inform viewers of the mutual benefits of aid to Israel.

November 26, 2016 – 9:56 a.m.

Host: BILL SCANLAN [bscanlan@c-span.org, journal@c-span.org, viewer@c-span.org, @bscanlanCSPAN, @cspanwj, facebook.com/cspan ].

Topic: Fidel Castro dead – future of U.S.-Cuba relations?

Caller: Linda from Florida (click here to view).

NOTE: C-SPAN characteristically indulges and encourages an angry racist ranter vilifying America, Christians and Israel.

Caller: “I just want to say to all of these Americans – the so-called Christians who are hailing the death of this individual [Fidel Castro] – they want him to go to hell. It is reprehensible when we speak about people and talk about the love of God. Look at what we have done to people. What did he [a previous caller] say about their neighborhood was not going to sleep bad tonight because Cuba's leader died? He doesn't even know why we went there, why we had fought there and why we overthrew Cuba. Read history, white America!”

Host: “Linda, do you think people are protesting more about what he stood for than what he actually did rather than the individual himself?”

Caller: “The answer to that would be looking at both sides, some of the treacherous things he did when he got into power like most people do when they dominate. Look at the good he did also. They feel like they are oppressing people in the land of Cuba. Well, look at what we did to Saddam Hussein [dictator of Iraq]. Look at what we did to [Muammar] Gaddafi [dictator of Libya]. All we look at is what the media tells us. If you are not looking at C-SPAN, free speech TV – BBC – you do not know what is going on outside of your borders. America is cursed until you make it right with people. The world is doing everything that we do. Look at what Israel is doing to the Gaza people and the other Palestinians.”

Host: “I will let you go there as we wrap up the program. We are just getting a statement from the White House that has just been released. A statement on the passing of Fidel Castro.”

NOTE: Again, a Washington Journal host fails to offer a rebuke or challenge – in response to a caller's incendiary racist falsehoods right out of the playbook of Rev. Louis Farrakhan and his Nation of Islam. Journal's chronic journalistic malpractice continues apace.

November 25, 2016 – 7:19 a.m.

Host: KIMBERLY ATKINS, Boston Herald newspaper chief Washington reporter and columnist [journal@c-span.org, viewer@c-span.org, @cspanwj, facebook.com/cspan].

Topic: Would you boycott a company for political reasons?

Caller:  Esther from Fairfax, California (click here to view).

Note: Caller's notion of a political boycott is one aimed at harming companies that deal with the Jewish state.

Caller: “I think politically-based boycotts is sometimes the only recourse that ordinary people have to try to make change. That is what helped to bring about the end of apartheid in South Africa, and it was used during the civil rights movement. We have a long tradition of political boycotts. I am boycotting companies that are profiting from the Israeli occupation of Palestinian land. One of these companies is Hewlett-Packard which is very involved in the surveillance system in the West Bank.”

Host: “Esther, have you always taken into consideration political views or world events when you choose which retailers you shop?”

Caller: “No, I haven't. I am pretty much focused right now on the Israel-Palestine situation. Well, yes, I do sometimes apply that to other situations. But I can't come up with one at the moment. I can't right now think of what I have done on that.”

Host: “Okay.”

NOTE: Caller supports politically-based boycotts but is “focused” only on targeting companies doing business with the state of Israel because of “Israeli occupation of Palestinian land.” Where does the caller get her information from concerning Israel? What is this “occupation” about? Is there another side to this issue? But it is business as usual for the Washington Journal program – pertinent questions are not asked and viewers are subjected to misinformation and propaganda. On the plus side for this host, she did lead the caller to expose herself as being obsessively anti-Israel.

The myth of “Israeli occupation” is related to the false accusation that Israel is a “colonial project.” If other peoples have a right to live securely in their homelands, then the Jewish people certainly have a right to live securely in their ancestral homeland. This includes Jewish communities (“settlements”) in the West Bank. Furthermore, these settlements take up no more than six percent of the land of the West Bank and 95 percent of West Bank Arabs live in areas administered by the Palestinian Authority. The 20th century restoration of the nation of Israel was never intended to be at the expense of anyone. In 1948, the Jews accepted the U.N. partition plan but the Arabs initiated their genocidal campaign aimed at cleansing the land of all Jews.

A key element of the “occupation” myth is the claim that West Bank Jewish settlements are illegal as well as a hindrance to peace. A “hindrance to peace”? Yes – for a society brainwashed by a steady stream of antisemitic, anti-Israel incitement from Palestinian media, mosques and schools in violation of Article 26 (2) of the U.N. Universal Declaration of Human Rights, as well as in violation of Israeli-Palestinian agreements. On the other hand, there is nothing in mainstream Jewish society relating to Arabs (or any ethnic/religious/racial group) that is remotely analogous to that found chronically in official Palestinian sources aimed at the destruction of Israel and Jews. Thus it is that Palestinian Arabs (and not surprisingly – their anti-Israel supporters elsewhere) demand a Jew-free apartheid in the West Bank.

Can the settlements be considered illegal? Basic international law in this case, the League of Nations' Palestine Mandate, Article 6, calls for "close Jewish settlement" on the land west of the Jordan River. Article 6 is incorporated by Article 80 of the U.N. Charter, sometimes referred to as "the Palestine article." The United States endorsed the mandate, including Article 6, in the 1924 Anglo-American Convention. The notion that Israelis are occupying Palestinian land is false. The land in question is owned by Israeli Jews (legally purchased) and is considered to be part of disputed West Bank land that will most likely go to Israel in any peace settlement.

In fact, no Arab country has ever had legal sovereignty in any part of the West Bank which was the heartland of the ancient Israeli nation. Likewise, the fiction of an ongoing Palestinian nation is exposed by the fact that all, or nearly all, West Bank Arabs considered themselves to be “southern Syrians” until the 1960s when Arab terrorist leader Yasser Arafat and his disciples adopted the notion of Palestinian Arab nationhood as a rallying anti-Israel tactic.

The West Bank was occupied by Jordan from 1948 to 1967, when Israel took control as a result of successful self-defense in the 1967 Six-Day War. As Eugene Rostow – a co-author of U.N. Security Council Resolution 242 (1967), the keystone of all subsequent successful Arab-Israeli negotiations pointed out – 242 does not require complete Israeli withdrawal. Rather, the status of the territory, to which Jews as well as Arabs have legitimate claims, is to be resolved in negotiations as called for in the resolution and by U.N. Security Council Resolution 338 (1973). Meanwhile, Jewish villages and towns built in the West Bank (Judea and Samaria, the ancient homeland of the Jewish people) since 1967 are no more deserving of condemnation than are Arab villages built since then in previously existing Arab villages and towns.

A cautionary lesson for Israel is what it experienced when unilaterally withdrawing from neighboring Arab areas from which it had been previously attacked. It left the security zone in Lebanon and then received kidnappings and repeated rocket attacks from Hezbullah. It left Gaza with not one Israeli remaining and in return it received kidnappings and repeated rocket attacks from Hamas. Will the West Bank be any different?

In keeping with C-SPAN's Washington Journal chronic journalistic malpractice pertaining to matters involving the Jewish people or the Jewish state, the above sort of information is rarely, if ever, aired to viewers.

November 21, 2016 – 9:06 a.m.

Host: PEDRO ECHEVARRIA [pechevarria@c-span.org, journal@c-span.org, viewer@c-span.org, @PLEchevarria, @cspanwj, facebook.com/cspan ].

Guest: ADAM BRANDON, president and CEO of FreedomWorks (conservative and libertarian advocacy group based in Washington D.C).

Topic: President-elect Trump's economic policies.

Caller: Alberto from New York City (click here to view).

Note: Misleading information is conveyed to viewers as caller denigrates Israel. Guest is silent to the denigration as is host. It's business as usual at C-SPAN's Washington Journal when it concerns Jews or Israel.

Caller: "Yeah, how come this country never has any money for the people here – for the Americans? They have money for other people to do what they want. For example, they give $2 billion [indiscernible]. I understand Israel gets $4 billion for per year and will get another $38 billion for next 10 years. Now what do they do with that money? I understand they give themselves free education, free health insurance. We can't even get Obamacare over here. We can't get no kind of insurance. We have to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars for education. That's [financial aid to Israel] something that could be for the American people and that is something that they never talk about."

Guest: "Thanks, caller. I don't want to keep going back to my same point but it's true that we need to get back to three or four percent economic growth and that's when people will start to feel wages increase. Since 1999, America has not seen significant pay increases. So getting to the question you brought up about foreign aid, I know it is hard for people when they look at infrastructure problems or the healthcare problem or any of the other issues when Washington is sending billions and billions and billions of dollars around the world. I think that is why one of Trump's main points is he is pulling money back from different projects at the United Nations and that's one reason he won election. People are looking at [indiscernible]. We need to take care of problems at home. If you go around to our inner cities and neighborhoods, they are in bad shape and why fix places in Nigeria, and in Asia, when we need to fix communities in Ohio and Michigan."

NOTE: When a Washington Journal caller complains about sending financial aid to another country because the money is needed for communities in the United States, the only country mentioned is Israel and typically neither host nor guest informs viewers of the realities involved.

First, less than one percent of the nearly $4 trillion annual federal budget goes to foreign aid. Second, the aid to Israel (it is military only) amounts to less than 0.1 percent of the budget. Furthermore, only Israel, of all U.S. allies, is under continual siege and it is the only Western-style democracy in the Middle East. The implication is that a conspiracy is involved. Caller is wrong. Invariably, C-SPAN fails to inform viewers of the mutual benefits of such aid. Israel is required by U.S. law to spend 74 percent (soon to be 100 percent) of the U.S. aid in the United States for the purchase of military materials which helps create or sustain thousands of American jobs.

Moreover, cooperative arrangements with Israel provide technology benefits to America related to unmanned aircraft, anti-missile defenses, battlefield medical techniques.

Finally, in the context of caller's complaint, viewers could have been informed about where federal funding might be found for various community projects. For example, a 2015 report cited only a few of the numerous instances of wasteful U.S. federal spending: $500,000 for a cricket league in Afghanistan, $375,000 to study the dating habits of America's seniors, $500,000 to foster butterfly farming on an Indian reservation, $15,000 to sponsor a Miami conference on hair restoration and so on.

The skewed world view of numerous Journal callers – with silver bullet solutions, conspiratorial cause-and-effect, and frequent default to anti-Israeli, anti-Jewish innuendo or assertion – seems not to matter to C-SPAN hosts. The result is less public affairs broadcasting than public pandering to an unseemly fringe mentality.

November 7, 2016 – 9:26 a.m.

Host: JOHN MCARDLE [jmcardle@c-span.org, journal@c-span.org, viewer@c-span.org, @cspanMcArdle, @cspanwj, facebook.com/cspan ].

Topic: One day until election 2016.

Caller: Mark from Washington, D.C. (Click here to view).

Caller: "I just wanted to say – I wanted to thank Trump already for killing the PC, the politically correct version where the Democrats deny all, deny that [President] Obama has deported two million [Hispanics]. It's obviously a trick to get the Hispanic vote and that business as usual is bombing Muslims, sending a trillion to a Jewish state and circumcising males in Washington. The status quo is bombs and Hillary [Clinton] is already a known killer with the bombs she's dropped. At 500,000 raped kids, that were not tested, falls directly on the shoulders of Obama and [President Bill] Clinton. I voted for Obama twice and Clinton twice. But I'm pretty tired of the status quo. Thank you for your time."

Host: "Why are you undecided at this point?"

Caller: "Because I see Trump getting better and I see Hillary getting worse. Trump is starting to make sense to me. We cannot have 15 million illegals in this country and 15 million home and unemployed. We are favoring the brown over Americans. I don't observe color."

[Host proceeds to the next caller without commenting.]

NOTE: Host unsurprisingly (considering the routine performance of such journalistic malpractice by this host and the other Washington Journal hosts), indulges and even encourages caller's hyperbolic tirade which includes wildly exaggerated charges and claims (including United States sending "A trillion [dollars] to a Jewish state").

November 7, 2016 – 9:56 a.m.

Host: JOHN MCARDLE [jmcardle@c-span.org, journal@c-span.org, viewer@c-span.org, @cspanMcArdle, @cspanwj, facebook.com/cspan ].

Topic: One day until election 2016.

Caller: Joe from Pensacola, Florida (click here to view).

Caller: "I have a couple of comments. One, any average taxpayer disobeying a Congressional order would be put in jail. That alone, I mean, people would be put in jail for less than what she's done – Hillary's done. Second of all, I believe this ISIS [Islamic State terror entity] thing – we got to blame ourselves on it. ISIS is radical Islamic terrorism has come about because of World War II. Two things about World War II. We can thank the Russians for being in World War II because it wasn't for the Russians we wouldn't have won World War II. Second of all, when we recognized Israel as an independent state and gave them the land, that is when Palestine has been against us and Israel. So, we caused the conflicts. We fund war against us by giving Iran $1.7 billion. Pakistan gets millions and billions of dollars going to Islamic states and every one of them are against us and Israel. Every one of them. We just proved Saudi Arabia sent the terrorists against us on 9/11 [Sept. 11, 2001 Islamist attack on United States] and all that. Every Islamic state is sending terrorists against us and Israel."

[Host fails to comment on caller's message]

NOTE: Caller's indulged tirade includes falsely heaping blame on the United States and Israel for the Muslim Arab conflict with Israel. C-SPAN rarely, if ever, informs viewers of the relevant facts. First, caller falsely claims that the United States "gave them the land" and enabled the conflict. The facts say otherwise. On Nov. 29, 1947 the United Nations adopted Resolution 181 (also known as the Partition Resolution) that would divide Great Britain's former Palestinian mandate into Jewish and Arab states in May 1948 when the British mandate was scheduled to end. Then on May 14, 1948 Israel declared its establishment as a state within the former mandate land. That night the new state was recognized by the United States and three days later by the United Nations. Also on that day the armies of five Arab states (together with Arab militants who were fighting for a people who were to become known as "the Palestinians" in the 1960s) invaded Israel and attempted to destroy it.

A comprehensive CAMERA report discusses the Arab-Israeli struggle: "It [the false blame] fails to consider the primary issue that has motivated and fueled the dispute from the 1917 Balfour Declaration calling for ‘a national home for the Jewish people' until today – namely, the steadfast refusal by Arab and Palestinian leaders to accept a permanent Jewish state in the region, within any borders at all."

Additionally, such wrongheaded blame as that of the caller disregards the Islamic supercessionist dynamic, based on Islam's Koran, which teaches that Islam has replaced Christianity and Judaism and – accordingly, mainstream Islam divides the world between Dar al-Harb (The House of War) and Dar al-Islam (The House of Islam) in which the land of Israel is located. It follows that Islamism rejects the right of Jews to live in any part of their ancient historic homeland which pre-dates Islam (and Muslim conquests) by thousands of years. An extension of this line of thinking is that true world peace will only come when Dar al-Islam conquers Dar al-Harb which includes the United States and the rest of the West. The Palestinian leaders both in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank evidently subscribe to this Islamist line of thinking.

Host: PEDRO ECHEVARRIA [pechevarria@c-span.org, journal@c-span.org, viewer@c-span.org, @PLEchevarria, @cspanwj, facebook.com/cspan ].

Guest: ED GOEAS, Republican pollster, president and CEO of Tarrance Group.

Topic: Polling and Campaign 2016.

Caller: Patrick from Pennsylvania (click here to view).

Note: This conspiracy mongering, repeat caller invariably includes vilification of Israel, as he does here, in his rants. He repeats here his preposterous, baseless charge that Israel manipulates U.S. elections through voting machines.

Caller: "It is absolutely stunning when you look at the manipulation of the American people when foreign governments are manufacturing our voting systems i.e. the state of Israel, and manipulating the American vote. Anybody who thinks that our system can't be hacked – you get such a [indiscernible] of deceit and the American people are waking up to this. Here is a newsflash for you – what you are listening to in the press right now with the geopolitics – as the son of a former director of the U.S.I.A.[United States Information Agency] – I can tell you right now that our nation is being manipulated into a third world war. And the Council on Foreign Relations is choosing a candidate that they want viewed as the most viable surrogate for their candidacy."

Host: "Okay, Patrick."

Note: What is phoner's information source for the spurious, anti-Israel charge? The question is not asked which is consistent with Washington Journal's journalistic malpractice pertaining to defamation of Jews and Israel.

Guest: "Certainly, you see a lot of conspiracy theories growing out there with the more disenchantment you have. The one thing I hear in the focus groups these days and has been fairly consistent with the polling – about the presidential race, how did we end up with both of these candidates? They feel that the country is going in the wrong direction. And they look at these two nominees and they say, how did we end up with these candidates being so negative? I think the conspiracy theory thing is going to continue. But I have to say, it is a little bit disconcerting to see our nominee [Donald Trump] pushing this narrative that the system is rigged. That is somewhat disingenuous for someone running for office who basically went through a system where he got 44 percent of the popular vote all the way through the race and then pointing to a rigged system. People try to hack in and manipulate data, yes. But a lot of work goes into making sure that doesn't happen. I think we have to be concerned for it – but is it happening in widespread ways? There's no indication that it is, number one. Number two, the bigger the margin Hillary has, the less that argument is going to hold sway on election day."

NOTE: CAMERA has monitored and documented in C-SPAN Watch these previous Washington Journal calls from this phoner: On the Jan.1, 2014 broadcast (also hosted by Echevarria ) the phoner (at 8:28 a.m) (click here to view) was indulged as he mendaciously bashed Israel and insulted the guest, Marc Ginsberg, a distinguished Jewish American former U.S. ambassador and advisor to President Clinton, "I have to tell you Mr. Ginsberg, your deceit is monumental..." The corresponding C-SPAN Watch entry can be seen here. On Dec. 26, 2013 (7:11 a.m.), this phoner claimed essentially that Israel controls the United States. The C-SPAN Watch entry can be seen here. Likewise, on Sept. 24, 2013, host Echevarria indulged at length and even encouraged this phoner in his conspiracy mongering. Similar calls from the phoner occurred on Nov. 22, 2012; April 5, 2012 and April 1, 2012.
