AFP Removes Reference to Tel Aviv as Capital City

In response to communication from CAMERA’s Israel office, the influential wire service Agence France Presse has removed an incorrect identification of Tel Aviv as a capital city. The introduction of Feb. 24 survey of teenagers around the globe included the following:

As part of our series on teenagers, we asked a random selection of middle-class youngsters from various capitals how they see their world.

Among the quoted teens was “Elad, 14, Tel Aviv.”
 
The same day that the wire service story appeared, CAMERA contacted AFP editors noting that Jerusalem, not Tel Aviv, is Israel’s capital. The article also misidentified Lagos as a capital city.
 
Editors commendably fixed the article, and resent it to their subscribers. The amended, accurate version states (“Teenage voices around the world“):

As part of our series on teenagers, we asked a random selection of middle-class youngsters from various cities how they see their world …

This AFP correction, issued during the same news cycle as the original error, underscores the vital preemptive work of CAMERA’s Israel office monitoring wire service stories and correcting errors before they are reproduced in media outlets around the world.
