Where’s the Coverage? The Real Arafat Mystery: Where’s the Money?

Most of this coverage began when Al Jazeera reported that the Swiss Radiophysics Institute tested some of Yasser Arafat’s belongings and found high levels of polonium-210.

In an interview with Al Jazeera, Suha Arafat not only insinuates that the United States and Israel may have played a part in murdering Yasser Arafat, she also states:

There’s justice in life. Sometimes God brings this justice to us… yesterday, there was in the press, reports that the Hamas authority discovered Palestinian spies working for Israel, one of them for forty years, one for twenty.

There have been video allegations, confessions… one of them spoke about what he did for [Hamas co-founder Abdel Aziz al-] Rantissi, building bombs, moving information, but one of them, the most dangerous, said it has been my mission for twenty years, just the file of Suha Arafat, to destroy her image, to make allegations everywhere. Can you imagine? If they used Palestinian spies for this, what they would do in the international media, and the Jewish-controlled media in the United States, and all over.

So I say that truth will prevail…

Not surprisingly, she repeats the familiar anti-semitic trope that Jews control the media. That’s a given. She also charges that the media is out to smear her and she predicts that the truth will prevail.

If either of these were true — if the media were out to paint an unpleasant picture of Suha Arafat and most especially if the truth were to prevail — you would see story after story about Suha Arafat living the jet set lifestyle, shuttling between homes in France and Malta, all funded by the ill-gotten gains of Palestinian corruption. But you don’t.

You don’t hear how, after Arafat’s death, Palestinian Authority leaders reportedly agreed to pay Suha $22 million a year out of secret accounts.

You don’t hear how at one time Suha had stayed in the luxury Bristol Paris Hotel and had rented an entire floor for herself and her assistants at a cost of $16,000 a night.

You don’t hear about the money-laundering investigation conducted by French authorities into Suha’s finances.

You don’t even hear about the warrant issued by Tunisian authorities seeking to question Suha in connection with the theft of money intended to fund a school.

And, despite her current protestations that she wants the truth to prevail and seeks to learn the cause of Arafat’s death, at the time of his illness, Suha would not even allow medical testing to be done. In fact, Palestinian leaders tried to bribe her into allowing them access to Arafat, at one point offering her $2 million which she rejected.

In the meantime, Finance Minister Nabil Kassis recently announced that the Palestinian Authority could not pay their employees and said the PA financial crisis is “the worst” in three years. This is true despite the fact that international donors, including the United States, have given the PA billions of dollars over the years.

Therefore, one has to ask what happened to the PA money? Where does Suha Arafat get the money to live her lavish lifestyle? And… Where’s the coverage?
