CAMERA Prompts Haaretz Correction on West Bank Barrier

CAMERA’s Israel office has prompted correction of a Haaretz photo caption in the English edition which wrongly identified the central Israeli city of Modi’in as next to the concrete security barrier.

The April 25 photograph and caption, which accompanied a column by Peter Beinart, follow:

As we noted in our Snapshots blog yesterday, the pictured houses are not from the city of Modi’in, a bedroom community in central Israel within Israel’s pre-1967 boundaries. In no place does the concrete barrier reach within that proximity of Modiin. According to Haaretz‘s Hebrew edition, this photograph shows Modiin Illit, also known as Kiryat Sefer, a Haredi town several kilometers away from Modiin, over the Green Line.

The Hebrew caption states: “A Palestinian woman in front of the separation barrier near Modiin Ilit, 2011” (CAMERA’s translation). The error was the latest example of “Haaretz, Lost in Translation.”

Haaretz editors commendably published this timely and straightforward correction today on page 2 following communication from CAMERA:
