CAMERA’s Israel Director Addresses Institute for Counter-Terrorism

Tamar Sternthal, director of CAMERA’s Israel office, addressed the Ninth Annual International Conference of the Institute for Counter-Terrorism at the Interdisciplinary Center Herzilya on Sept. 9, 2009. Ms. Sternthal spoke on a panel addressing “Manipulation of Western Mainstream News Media in Assymetrical Warfare,” alongside Dr. Richard Landes, professor of history at Boston University; Mr. Stuart Green, Lieutenant Commander of the U.S. Navy, who spoke as a private citizen; Mr. Lee Smith, a journalist and visiting fellow at the Hudson Institute; and Mr. Danielle Moro, chief editor of TG5, Italy.

Ms. Sternthal’s lecture, on “Hamas’ and Hezbollah’s News Media Strategy,” discussed how the two organizations sought to maximize coverage of civilian casualties and suppress coverage of combatant deaths in their respective conflicts, the Lebanon 2006 war and Operation Cast Lead in the winter of 2008-09.
