CAMERA Prompts IHT Correction on UN Resolution

As noted Sunday on CAMERA’s blog Snapshots, UN adviser Hans Küng penned an Op-Ed in the weekend edition of the International Herald Tribune dispensing advice to the world on “How to prevent a clash of civilizations” partially based on a distortion of UN Resolution 242. CAMERA staff has prompted the following correction in today’s edition clarifying the terms of the resolution, dealing with Israeli withdrawal from territory gained in 1967:

Error (International Herald Tribune, Hans Küng, Op-Ed, 3/4-5/06): The Palestinians can likewise demand that first Israel withdraw from all occupied territories in accordance with UN resolution 242. . .

Correction (3/7/06): An opinion article Saturday about preventing a clash of civilizations referred incorrectly to UN Security Council Resolution 242, passed after the 1967 Middle East War, which calls for Israel’s armed forces to withdraw “from territories occupied in the recent conflict,” not all territories occupied in the war.

The Tribune is to be applauded for promptly correcting the error.
