AFP Corrects Regarding Netanyahu Stance on Palestinian Governance in Gaza

CAMERA’s Israel office today prompted an Agence France Presse correction after the news agency erroneously reported that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has opposed any Palestinian governance in the Gaza Strip.

Today’s article, “Mediators make final push for Gaza truce deal,” had originally erred: “Netanyahu has rejected a full withdrawal from Gaza and has opposed any Palestinian governance of the territory.”

In fact, speaking before Congress on July 25, 2024, the Israeli Prime Minister voiced support for Palestinian governance of the Gaza Strip so long as the governing Palestinians do not seek Israel’s destruction.

As Agence France Press itself reported July 24 (“Netanyahu calls for demilitarized, deradicalized post-war Gaza“):

“Gaza should have a civilian administration run by Palestinians who do not seek to destroy Israel. That’s not too much to ask,” Netanyahu added.

In response to communication from CAMERA, AFP promptly corrected the article, which now rightly reports that Netanyahu has “opposed any post-war role for Hamas in the territory.” While the corrected version appears on MSN, France 24 still carries the original problematic copy as of this writing.
