CAMERA Letter Refutes Washington Post Columnist

Israel is not the obstacle to Middle East peace
 
In his March 31 column, “Israel’s touch of McCarthyism,” Harold Meyerson charged Israel’s Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu with “continuing to authorize new settlements.” But Mr. Netanyahu has not authorized any new West Bank Jewish communities. His government has approved the building of new housing units within existing settlements; this in no way changes the map of the territory.

Mr. Meyerson also alleged that “organizations and funders around the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) . . . support Israel’s intransigence.” When Israel embarked on the Oslo process with Yasser Arafat and the Palestine Liberation Organization, AIPAC — the registered pro-Israel lobby — supported it. When Israel and the United States proposed a West Bank and Gaza Strip Palestinian state, with eastern Jerusalem as its capital, in 2000 and 2001 and Israel repeated the offer in 2008, AIPAC and the “organizations and funders” around it supported that. The intransigence came from the Palestinian Arabs, who rejected all three deals, the first two violently.

If in fact “McCarthyism” is at work here, it’s Mr. Meyerson’s.
