NY Times Fixes Subhead Assigning West Bank to Palestinians

Prompted by CAMERA, the New York Times amended text describing the West Bank’s Area C — disputed territory under Israeli control — as being “Palestinian territory.”

The blurb under the headline to a May 7 Op-Ed by Daniel Pipes had initially summarized the story as follows: “A conservative American commentator on Middle Eastern affairs gives six reasons to believe that taking over Palestinian territory would harm both U.S.-Israel relations and Israel’s status as the Jewish state.”

After an exchange with CAMERA, the subhead was amended so that it no longer assigned the territory in question to one side of the dispute. It now reads, “A conservative American commentator on Middle Eastern affairs gives six reasons to believe that taking over the territory would harm both U.S.-Israel relations and Israel’s status as the Jewish state.”

Several weeks before this language was adjusted, CAMERA prompted a correction to a news story that had likewise referred to Area C land as “Palestinian.” For more details on why the language in each case was erroneous, see CAMERA’s detailed article about the news correction.
