The New York Times, one of the most influential newspapers in the world, not only influences its readers but also has significant impact on the news judgment and editorial perspective of other media. The New York Times quotes a Hamas spokesperson claiming Gilad Shalit, unlike Palestinian prisoners in Israel, was treated well. Unmentioned is that the conditions of Shalit's detention voilated international law. 
The New York Times and like-minded media often cast Jewish settlers as violent extremists assailing peaceful Palestinians, even though West Bank Arabs have murdered at least nine times as many Jewish civilians as the other way around. 
If it was written by almost anyone other than Nicholas D. Kristof on the editorial pages of the New York Times, "Is Israel Its Own Worst Enemy?" (Oct 5, 2011) would be shocking and outrageous. However, given Kristof's long history of anti-Israel rants, it's predictable and almost tiresome. 
As part of its general lopsided coverage of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, the New York Times has stepped up its attacks on Israeli settlers. According to Jerusalem bureau chief Ethan Bronner, "for much of the world, the very presence of ... Israeli settlers in the West Bank amounts to a kind of violent crime." 
The New York Times coverage of the Palestinian bid for UN membership reveals the blurring between its news and editorial pages. Palestinian responsibility for the stagnation of peace negotiations and the need for concessions is not news that's fit to print. 
The Western media has an opportunity to broaden their readers' understanding of the escalating conflict between Turkey and Israel by giving increased attention to Turkish regional activity and domestic problems. 
A story about the FBI’s attempts to eavesdrop on the Israeli Embassy in Washington and the resulting leak of wiretapped conversations relied on radical anti-Israel activists for the backbone of the story — but deceptively omitted identifying their extremist, fringe views. 
The Times isn't so bothered when Hamas restricts the freedom of movement of its population. This reflects a double standard by the newspaper, and an abandonment of Palestinians whose troubles don't fit the journalists' script. 
Ignoring video evidence and its own news coverage, the New York Times is now describing the violence directed at Israeli soldiers boarding the Mavi Marmara as nothing more than an Israeli claim. Maybe it happened. Maybe it didn't.
