The Headline Difference: Spain’s Cadena SER Obscures the Bondi Terror Attack

 The terrorist attack carried out on Dec. 13, 2025, targeting a Jewish celebration on Bondi Beach in Sydney put international media coverage to the test. As information emerged in real time, most Spanish-language media outlets adjusted their reporting accordingly, updating headlines to reflect confirmed facts.

Spain’s leading newspaper, El País, for instance, initially published a cautious headline: “At least two people detained after a shooting on Australia’s Bondi Beach in Sydney.”

As key details were confirmed, editors repeatedly revised the headline to accurately reflect the nature of the attack, the number of victims, and its specific target—the Jewish community. “At least nine dead in an attack against a Jewish celebration on Bondi Beach in Sydney” later gave way to a more updated headline as the death toll tragically rose: “At least fifteen dead in an attack against a Jewish celebration on Bondi Beach in Sydney.”

Cadena SER—Spain’s most influential national radio network and part of the same media group as El País (PRISA) — published an initially ambiguous headline which did not identify the attack as terrorism directed at Jewish civilians: “A shooting during a Jewish celebration in Sydney leaves at least 12 dead, including one of the attackers.”

But, unlike El País, Cadena SER failed to update as more information emerged confirming the circumstances (terrorists firing on families gathered for a Chanukah celebration) and the target (the Jewish community). The initial headline’s poor wording could easily reasonably be attributed to lack of clarity early on in the developing story. But the editors’ decision to keep language which leaves open the possibility of an internal incident or random shooting even after it was confirmed that terrorists targeted the Jewish holiday revelers is inexcusable.

CAMERA Español contacted Cadena SER both by email and on social media to flag the inaccuracy and lack of clarity, pointing out: “It’s not that they started shooting during a party. It was a terrorist attack AGAINST a Jewish celebration.”

While SER later updated the death toll in a subsequent headline, editors nevertheless continued to preserve the same misleading framing.

This editorial decision is particularly striking given that Cadena SER itself reported in the body of the article that New South Wales Premier Chris Minns had stated the attack was directed against Sydney’s Jewish community. In other words, the relevant information was known—but it did not make its way into the headline.

The whitewash of the terror attack targeting a Jewish community holiday celebration resurfaced in a follow-up piece, which referred to the attack as a “tragedy”: “A fruit vendor, the anonymous hero of the Sydney tragedy: he lunges at one of the attackers and manages to wrest the rifle from him.”

From “a shooting during a Jewish celebration” to “a tragedy,” Cadena SER consistently misrepresented a targeted terrorist attack against Jews as a generic event. The result was information that was technically accurate but editorially incomplete. Updating casualty figures without clarifying the nature of the attack left readers without the essential context needed to understand what had occurred.

This distinction matters. Cadena SER is one of Spain’s most influential media outlets, with nationwide reach and a large audience. Its editorial choices play a significant role in shaping public understanding of major international events. In this case, while other Spanish media adjusted their coverage as reliable information emerged, Cadena SER maintained headlines which concealed the ideological and targeted nature of the attack.
