Times of Israel Corrects: Jerusalem Bomber Isn’t Israeli

Times of Israel today corrected an article which had erroneously identified Jerusalem bomber Eslam Froukh (also spelled Aslam Faroukh) as an Israeli Arab. Froukh, who murdered two civilians in the Nov. 23 double-bombing carried out during rush hour to maximize casualties, does not have Israeli citizenship.

The headline had originally stated: “Arab Israeli with Islamic State ties arrested for bombings in Jerusalem.” In addition, the article’s first paragraph also had cited the bomber’s purported Israeli citizenship: “The Shin Bet security agency and Israel Police on Tuesday said security forces had arrested an Arab Israeli man affiliated with the Islamic State jihadist group for a deadly double bombing attack in Jerusalem last month.”

As reported in Haaretz, “investigators revealed Froukh has an Israeli identity card, his mother is a resident of East Jerusalem and his father is a resident of Ramallah”
Indeed, the police have said that Froukh is a “resident of Kfar Aqab.” They did not identify him as a citizen. All residents of Israeli, including non-citizen Arabs living in Jerusalem, carry Israeli identity cards.

In response to communication from CAMERA’s Israel office, Times of Israel quickly corrected the headline, which now accurately reports: “East Jerusalemite with Islamic State ties arrested for bombings at bus stops in city.” In addition, the amended opening sentence correctly reports: “The Shin Bet security agency and Israel Police on Tuesday revealed that security forces had arrested a Palestinian resident of East Jerusalem with ties to the Islamic State jihadist group for a deadly double bombing attack in the capital last month.”
