Is Arafat the Legitimate Leader of the Palestinians?


There is much debate in the news about Arafat's future role. Many voice the opinion that Arafat must inevitably be a negotiating partner because he is the legitimate, democratically elected leader of the Palestinians.

Daniel Polisar, formerly head of Peace Watch, an independent monitoring organization and the only Israeli group officially accredited by the Palestinian Authority as an observer of its January 1996 elections, has authored a detailed examination of Arafat's so-called “legitimacy.”
