ABC Omits Hezbollah’s Role in UNIFIL Death

Atop the ABC News homepage there are topics of interest, updated each day, for easy reference and clicking by news consumers. The “Iran war” has held a permanent spot for months, standing out with the words “Live Updates” in bold red font next to it.

The news briefs range from a few sentences to several paragraphs, and the goal is to keep readers informed as close in time as possible. The framework is a good one, but mandates timely updates, especially when the first iteration of reporting omits salient details, like Hezbollah’s role in the death of U.N. peacekeepers.

On June 4, at 4:50 AM EDT, ABC published a news brief entitled “UN Lebanon peacekeeper killed in mortar attack.” No blame for the killing was mentioned when ABC reported:

A United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon [UNIFIL] peacekeeper died on Thursday morning after sustaining injuries in a Wednesday night mortar attack on a position near Marjayoun in southeastern Lebanon, the force reported.

Two other peacekeepers were injured in the attack and are undergoing treatment at a UNIFIL base, the force said in posts to social media.

While the phrasing is passive and clearly worded so as to avoid ascribing blame, it is possible the journalists did not know who was responsible when they filed the report at 4:50 AM. However, a little more than two hours later, they were on notice. Nearly 18 hours later, there has been no update.

At 7:03 AM EDT on Telegram (and two minutes later on X), the IDF placed responsibility on Hezbollah for the UNIFIL death and injuries, stating the terror group launched mortar shells that hit a UNIFIL position.

This is not the first time ABC has erased or significantly downplayed Hezbollah’s role in this conflict. Most recently, CAMERA identified an ABC video report that did not mention Hezbollah’s use of fiber-optic exploding drones towards Israeli soldiers and residential communities. In addition, the report only mentioned Hezbollah’s fire into northern Israel as a response to intensified Israeli strikes, instead of the cause. In March, CAMERA wrote about ABC reporting that omitted both Hezbollah’s ceasefire violations and any context as to Israeli operations against Hezbollah since the November 2024 ceasefire.
