The Committee for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting and Analysis (CAMERA) has filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request for the full investigative files held by the U.S. Department of Education, the Department of Justice, and the Department of Health and Human Services in relation to their July 30, 2025 settlement agreement with Brown University.
The FOIA request, filed by CAMERA Senior Research Analyst David Litman, seeks the complete record of depositions, communications, investigator notes, and draft agreements that led to the settlement. It also asks for documentation relating to Brown’s Center for Middle East Studies, its partnerships with Birzeit University, and all complaints of discrimination against students at Brown.
“The resolution agreement left many questions unanswered,” said Litman. “The public deserves transparency, accountability, and genuine reform where taxpayer money is involved.”
Litman acknowledged the important role federal investigators play in combating antisemitism and extremism on campus, but said stronger measures are needed in Brown’s case. “CAMERA has repeatedly exposed the shoddy, biased, and often hateful education, or indoctrination, being given by radical academics at Brown,” he explained. “Our FOIA request is about ensuring adequate resolution of these serious problems.”
The July settlement included provisions for enhanced security at Jewish events and renewed partnerships with Israeli academics. CAMERA argues that while these measures are steps forward, they fail to confront the entrenched hostility that has long characterized Brown’s treatment of Israel and its supporters.
“The agreement may be a relief to Brown administrators, but for students at Brown it changes little,” said Litman. “Enhanced security at Hillel is no substitute for addressing the culture of hostility that has been normalized at Brown’s Center for Middle East Studies. The truth needs to come out.”
