CAMERA’s Israel office today prompted correction at CBS after the network’s website grossly underreported the number of hostages kidnapped Oct. 7 as “roughly 100.” In their March 16 article, Camilla Schick and Margaret Brennan erroneously cited “the Oct. 7, 2023, terrorist attack in which Hamas killed more than 1,000 Israelis and took roughly 100 more hostage” (“U.S., Israel interested in Sudan, Somalia and Syria for resettlement of Gazans, sources say“).
In fact, as CBS itself has accurately reported in multiple past articles, Hamas-led terrorists from the Gaza Strip kidnapped 251 Israelis and foreigners on Oct. 7, not “roughly 100.”
In addition, the Hamas-led invaders murdered more than 1200 Israelis. By underreporting the figure as “more than 1000” CBS erases more than 200 brutally murdered Israelis and foreigners.
Hi, @CamJourno @margbrennan @CBSNews. Hamas & their allies kidnapped *251* hostages, not “roughly 100.” (!!) They also killed more than 1200, which is more precise (& not even more words) than “more than 1,000.” Please correct. Thx https://t.co/mzJGPrXS6O pic.twitter.com/68B7Y1HFNK

In response to communication from CAMERA’s staff in Jerusalem, editors amended the passage, correcting the number of hostages to “roughly 250.” CBS, however, failed to amend the underreporting of those murdered in southern Israel by Hamas and other terrorists.
A correction about the hostages appended to the bottom of the article commendably informs readers of the change, stating: “Correction: This story has been edited to accurately reflect the number of Israelis taken hostage on Oct. 7, 2023.”
