The Times corrects false claim about former Israeli minister

Earlier today, we contacted Times (of London) editors over an article (“Can this grieving military man topple Israel’s ultimate survivor?”, July 14) which erred in the following sentence:

For most of Eisenkot’s career, rising to the role of chief of staff of the Israel Defence Forces before resigning in protest at Netanyahu’s war two years ago, being plainspoken had not been a problem.

We pointed out that Eisenkot served as chief of staff of the IDF from 2015-19.  When he resigned in 2024, he was serving as a minister without portfolio in Benjamin Netanyahu’s short-lived war cabinet, as the outlet correctly reported at the time.

Gantz and his fellow war cabinet colleague, Gadi Eisenkot, another former chief of staff of the Israel Defence Forces (IDF), are returning to the opposition benches, which they left at the start of the war, along with the rest of the members of their centrist National Unity party.

Editors promptly amended the sentence, which now reads as follows:

For most of Eisenkot’s career, rising to the role of chief of staff of the Israel Defence Forces before resigning as minister with[out] portfolio in protest at Netanyahu’s war two years ago, being plainspoken had not been a problem.
