UCC Body Acknowledges Human Rights Abuses in Iran

The United Church of Christ’s General Synod acknowledged the abuse of human rights in Iran. At its recent gathering in Grand Rapids Michigan, the General Synod passed a resolution of “Solidary and Friendship With Iran.”

This statement did not merely affirm the ties between the denomination and the Iranian people, or offer a vague call for prayer, but acknowledged the desire of the Iranian people to achieve self-government. It also called for “an end to the violence, repression, and bloodshed, against peaceful Iranian demonstrators, media, and others.” In sum, the resolution acknowledges the abuse of human rights in Iran in a straightforward, non-polemical and responsible manner.

The statement follows on previous efforts by UCC President and General Minister, Rev. John Thomas (whose term ends in September), to distance himself and the denomination for interfaith dinners with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad organized by the Mennonite Central Committee.

The UCC’s General Synod began on June 26, 2009 and ended on June 30.
