Yesterday Haaretz‘s English edition reported Hamas’ unsubstantiated claim that Israeli hostages were killed during the successful June 8 rescue operation while failing to note the Israeli military’s unequivocal denial. In response to communication from CAMERA’s Israel office, editors commendably updated the digital article to include the Israeli response to Hamas’ unverified claim.
Initially, the June 10 article, “Hamas: 274 Gazans killed in Saturday’s hostage rescue op” (print, page 2 and online here) had incompletely reported:
Hamas’ armed al-Qassam Brigades said in a video posted on its Telegram channel on Sunday that three hostages were killed, including a U.S. citizen, in an Israeli military operation on Saturday in which some hostages were freed. The group did not release the names of those said to be killed, but the video showed what appeared to be three unidentifiable corpses using censor bars over their faces.
The article is attributed to Jack Khoury and Reuters. Notably, the corresponding Reuters article includes the following information which is absent from Haaretz‘s version:
A Hamas assertion on Saturday that some hostages had died was rejected as “a blatant lie” by the Israeli military.
In addition, the following information appeared in Reuters’ original article, but not in Haaretz‘s derivative piece:
Israel’s military said a special forces officer was killed in exchanges of fire with militants emerging from cover in residential blocks, and that it knew of “under 100” Palestinians killed, though not how many of them were fighters or civilians.
In response to communication from CAMERA’s Israel office, Haaretz commendably added the IDF response to Hamas’ claim about the killing of hostages. The updated digital article now ends: “The IDF said these claims are ‘blatant lies.'”
