Expanded LA Times Caption Is Clear: No Israeli Flag Flying on Muslim Shrine

Earlier today we noted a Los Angeles Times photo which, together with an incomplete caption, gives the false and highly inflammatory appearance that an Israeli flag is literally flying atop of the Islamic Dome of the Rock on the Temple Mount. If an Israeli flag was indeed flying on top of the mosque, this would be huge provocation which would surely ignite the entire region.

The photo and the original caption follow:

The LA Times caption had stated: “Seen from Mount Scopus, the distinctive golden Dome of the Rock, one of Islam’s holiest sites, stands out in Jerusalem’s walled Old City on Nov. 3.”

The original photo caption from EPA made clear that the flag was actually “flying from the roof of an apartment building in the Jewish Quarter of the Old City.” By omitting this information, Times readers would wrongly believe that Israelis planted their flag on top of the Muslim shrine.

Following correspondence from CAMERA’s Israel office today, editors immediately added the critical information whose earlier omission so skewed readers’ understanding. The expanded caption currently appears as follows:

The updated caption states: “Seen from Mount Scopus, the distinctive golden Dome of the Rock, one of Islam’s holiest sites, stands out in Jerusalem’s walled Old City on Nov. 3. Behind it a large Israeli flag flies atop an apartment building.”

CAMERA commends Times editors for the immediate move to clarify the photograph.
