AP Amends Captions to Acknowledge Hamas Flag on Temple Mount

In response to communication from CAMERA, Associated Press amended a photo caption which initially ignored that Palestinians photographed on the Temple Mount were waving a Hamas flag, and not just a Palestinian flag.

The incomplete May 2 caption had originally stated:

Masked Palestinians carry a Palestinian flag during Eid al-Fitr celebrations next to the next to the [sic] Dome of the Rock Mosque in the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in the Old City of Jerusalem, Monday, May 2, 2022. Eid al-Fitr, festival of breaking of the fast, marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan. (AP Photo/Mahmoud Illean)

Two flags are clearly visible in the photograph: Hamas’ green flag and the Palestinian flag. So why did the news agency cite only the Palestinian flag, ignoring the equally prominent flag of the Palestinian terror organization?

Following communication from CAMERA, editors promptly amended the caption, which now states:

ADDS HAMAS FLAG – Masked Palestinians carry Palestinian and Hamas flags during Eid al-Fitr celebrations next to the next to the Dome of the Rock Mosque in the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in the Old City of Jerusalem, Monday, May 2, 2022. Eid al-Fitr, festival of breaking of the fast, marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan. (AP Photo/Mahmoud Illean)

The amended caption carries the prominent heading: “Addition Israel Palestinians Eid Al-Fitr.”

Separately, the caption erroneously refers to the Dome of the Rock as a mosque. While it is an Islamic shrine, it is not a mosque.
