For at least the fourth time in recent years, CAMERA prompts correction at Reuters after the influential wire service incorrectly cited Tel Aviv as shorthand for Israel.
In the most recent case, a Reuters’ article yesterday by Eltahir Nafisa and Pesha Magid had erred (“Gaza Arab plan may involve up to $20 million regional contribution, sources say“):
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar said Tel Aviv was waiting to evaluate the plan as it comes together but warned that any plan in which Hamas continued to have presence in Gaza was not acceptable.
In response to communication from CAMERA’s Israel office, Reuters commendably amended the text in both English and Arabic. The reports in both languages now accurately reports:
Israeli foreign minister Gideon Saar said Israel was waiting to evaluate the plan as it comes together but warned that any plan in which Hamas continued to have presence in Gaza was not acceptable.
Notably, Reuters refrained from identifying Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. In addition, editors did not append a note to the article alerting readers to the correction, which is common journalistic practice, including at Reuters.
