When Abingdon Press, the publishing house of the United Methodist Church, took a pass on Gary Burge's book, Whose Land? Whose Promise?, it dodged a bullet.
The United Church of Christ is preparing a response to CAMERA’s concerns about Gary Burge’s book, Whose Land? Whose Promise? published by Pilgrim Press. UPDATE Feb. 7, 2014: The UCC has announced that no response is forthcoming.
After CAMERA contacted officials at Wheaton College about its concerns with the work of Professor Gary Burge (left), the school's provost responded by stating he will take no formal action. 
Pilgrim Press has rescinded its offer to distribute an insert accompanying Gary Burge's error-laden book, Whose Land? Whose Promise? The fact that the offer was made indicates that the publisher lacks confidence in the text. Wheaton College Professor Gary Burge was given a second opportunity to provide his readers with a reliable and trustworthy text about Israel and the Palestinians, but he threw it away. 
A few weeks after the PC(USA) issued a statement acknowledging anti-Jewish bias in its witness about the Arab-Israeli conflict, it withdrew the document and issued a watered-down version. When Jewish leaders complained, the denomination's press officer responded with an ugly ad-hominem. Whose Land? Whose Promise? a book published by The Pilgrim Press, puts flesh-and-blood Jews living in Israel into a unique theological category deserving special judgement. In 2003, Pilgrim Press published a book that is filled with inaccuracies and sourcing problems. Despite these inaccuracies, it has been embraced by "peace" activists in the U.S as a trusted source of information.
