ABC Corrects Reference to Tel Aviv As Israel’s Capital

CAMERA’s Jerusalem office today prompted a speedy correction to an ABC News story which erroneously cited Tel Aviv as shorthand for Israel.

ABC’s article today entitled “Iran crackdown deepens with speedy executions and arrests” had erred in the first paragraph:

Three Iranian men were executed this week on alleged charges of collaborating with Israel, according to the Islamic Republic judiciary, bringing the total number of people put to death on similar charges during the 12-day war between Tehran and Tel Aviv to six. [Emphasis added.]

Of course, Jerusalem, not Tel Aviv, is Israel’s capital, and thus using Tel Aviv as a metonymy for Israel is incorrect.
ABC agreed that a correct was in order, and editors promptly amended “Tehran and Tel Aviv” to “Iran and Israel.” Notably, the shift away from naming the capital cities points to an enduring reticence to acknowledge Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.
