What does an academic journal with a self-proclaimed “dedication to accuracy” do to make right with its readers after it dramatically misinforms them about an important historical document? In the case of the Journal of Palestine Studies, it apparently threatens legal action. 
The Journal of Palestine Studies published a falsified quote, which historian Ilan Pappé attributed to David Ben-Gurion. But instead of clearing the record with a straightforward correction, the journal misled readers further. It defended Pappé by citing another inaccurate quote, and provided a substantive mistranslation of the letter in which the quote was said to appear. 
Defense Secretary Leon Panetta made headlines this week when he called on Israel to "just get to the damn [negotiating] table." The statement is peculiar, since Israel has pleaded with the Palestinians to return to the negotiating table while Palestinian leaders insist they won't do so unless Israel first satisfies their preconditions. 
According to Sarah Schulman, Israel should not be recognized for protecting gay rights, and anyone doing so should be seen as a participant in a nefarious PR campaign. 
Those looking to incite hate toward Israel can choose the crude path, or opt for a more highbrow route. While Kent State's Julio Pino opted for the former, University of Akron's Walter Hixson weighs in with a somewhat more polished bit of anti-Israel agitprop. 
The New York Times quotes a Hamas spokesperson claiming Gilad Shalit, unlike Palestinian prisoners in Israel, was treated well. Unmentioned is that the conditions of Shalit's detention voilated international law. 
USA Today recently reported that Maen Areikat, the Palestinian representative to the United States, said a future Palestine should have no Jews. Areikat responded that the newspaper published a malicious lie. But the audio essentially confirms the newspaper's account. 
The Times isn't so bothered when Hamas restricts the freedom of movement of its population. This reflects a double standard by the newspaper, and an abandonment of Palestinians whose troubles don't fit the journalists' script. 
Just as he did in the 1970s, when his job was to propagandize against Israel, and in the early 2000s, when he flatly lied about an Israeli official, Rashid Khalidi sharply distorts understanding of the Arab-Israeli conflict in an Aug. 31, 2011 Chicago Tribune Op-Ed. 
Ignoring video evidence and its own news coverage, the New York Times is now describing the violence directed at Israeli soldiers boarding the Mavi Marmara as nothing more than an Israeli claim. Maybe it happened. Maybe it didn't.
