Media Corrections

Accuracy and accountability are among the most important tenets of journalism. In combination, they mean media organizations are expected to publish or broadcast forthright corrections after sharing inaccurate information. The following corrections are among the many prompted by CAMERA’s communication with reporters and editors.

AP Corrects on Iranian Support for Global Terrorism

Why does the State Department list Iran as a sponsor of terrorism? Simply because of "its support of anti-Israel groups," as if backing for Students for Justice in Palestine is enough to get Iran on the list? Hardly. CAMERA prompts an AP correction: Iran supports "Hezbollah and other Shia militia groups, including in Iraq, Syria and Bahrain."

AP Corrects About Western Wall

CAMERA prompts correction of an Associated Press article which erroneously referred to the Western Wall as "the last retaining wall of the biblical Jewish temple." The wall was a retaining wall for the mount upon which the temples stood, and it is one of several extant retaining wall.

AP Corrects: Ron Dermer Not ‘Trump’s Ambassador to Israel’

CAMERA prompts correction of an Associated Press story which wrongly identified Israeli Ambassador to the United States Ron Dermer as "Trump's ambassador to Israel." The error, and correction, were picked up by leading media outlets such as The New York Times and The Independent.

AP Improves Language on Bethlehem Area Security Barrier

The Associated Press inaccurately reported yesterday that the security barrier "surrounds" Bethlehem, when in fact it rings the city on the north and west, but not the east and south. CAMERA prompts moderate improvement to AP's language.

AP Corrects on Gaza’s ‘First’ Mall

CAMERA prompts corrections today of an AP headline, article and photo captions which wrongly referred to a new mall in Gaza as the territory's "first" mall. In 2010 and 2011, AP had covered the openings of smaller malls.

CAMERA Prompts AP Correction: Jerusalem is Israel’s Capital

CAMERA's Israel office prompted a correction of an Associated Press article that incorrectly identified Tel Aviv as Israel's capital. This was a case of an error in the journalistic practice of naming a nation's capital as shorthand for the country's government, i.e. mistakenly using "Tel Aviv" as shorthand for Israel's capital instead of "Jerusalem."

AP Corrects: US Does Not Consider Settlements ‘Illegal’

CAMERA prompts an important Associated Press correction noting that the U.S. does not consider Israeli settlements illegal. AP's many clients are also correcting, include The New York Times, ABC, The Gazette (Montreal), and more.

CAMERA Prompts AP Correction on Palestine Terminology

In response to communication from CAMERA, the Associated Press corrects an article which incorrectly referred to Palestine. CAMERA's timely work prevents misinformation from wire agencies appearing in media outlets around the world.
