The BBC describes the barrier around Bethlehem as a towering concrete wall stretching through the city.
There’s just one problem: most of it isn’t a wall. Approximately 95% of the barrier is a chain-link fence. Only about 5% consists of concrete wall sections, primarily in areas where snipers and terrorist attacks once targeted Israeli civilians.
The barrier was built during the Second Intifada after years of suicide bombings and terrorist attacks that killed hundreds of Israelis.
Since its construction, those attacks have fallen dramatically.
