St. George is one of the most famous and recognizable Christian saints, often depicted slaying a dragon. He’s the patron saint of England, Georgia, and soldiers, among many other things.
So what does he have to do with Israel?
He’s buried there!
A soldier in the Roman army, George was martyred in the Holy Land in the early fourth century for refusing to renounce his Christian faith. Remembered as a warrior against evil, he was canonized a Christian saint and is also highly venerated by the Druze, who regard him as a guardian and healer.
St. George’s feast day remains an important time to remember the saint, especially in his patron countries and cities.
St. George is buried in Lod, in central Israel, and pilgrims from all over the world can visit to pray at his tomb.
